Cloudberry able to serve 1.5 mln users; focuses on voice

Small cell operator Cloudberry says it can serve 1.5 million customers with the network that it has built up, Telecompaper.com reported on Aug 18, 2014. Earlier this month, Cloudberry bought a 2.6 GHz spectrum license for Norway from Nextnet. Cloudberry CEO Tom Guldberg said it can offer mobile telecommunications operators profitable contracts, as it will charge them a fixed price per cell, regardless of the amount of traffic that it carries. With 2 x 10 MHz in the band, it can carry an enormous amount of traffic, he told the publication. Each cell has a short reach, and it is inexpensive to deploy many of them, he added.

Cloudberry considers small cells a new wave within mobile telecoms, and it has entered a global agreement with Cisco. The Norwegian company will be something of a spearhead and shop window for Cisco, said Guldberg. It is operating in four countries and plans to enter others. Cloudberry will focus on LTE and voice calls, as it feels users have plenty of data coverage via Wi-Fi. However, the VoLTE standard is not yet available in Norway.

Telenor Norway technology director Frode Stoldal said the company is aware of Cloudberry and is testing its technology at Telenor Serbia. Netcom technology director Jon Christian Hillestad said it will have to see what Cloudberry comes up with.
