Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) intends to offer small cells in Moscow, St Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan between now and 2016, reports Telegeography.com on Oct 16, 2015. With a radius of up to 150m and working in the 2600MHz band, the operator intends to connect the small cells to its fiber-optic network in order to offload Long Term Evolution (LTE) traffic from its mobile base stations. No financial details of the plan were disclosed, but the operator says the upgrade will increase the speed and capacity of the LTE network, as well as improving radio coverage in areas of high traffic flow. The first phase of the project will kick off in the capital with other areas to follow soon after.
