KPN to improve 4G coverage in border areas

Eelco Blok, CEO of Koninklijke PTT Nederland (KPN) and Netherlands MD’s Joost Farwerck say that while attaining 100 percent mobile network coverage is impossible, the current 98 percent should also be the minimum, Telecompaper.com reported on Thursday, with Blok noting that other countries have managed to achieve 100 percent coverage.

In the Netherlands, KPN has around 96 percent indoor coverage. Both the executives say coverage can be higher, but the operator\'s planned network is, in principle, completed and KPN is now focusing on network monitoring to improve performance where needed. And, in this, border areas are a key concern, and will be the focus of 4G coverage. The operator has agreements with its counterparts in neighboring countries on signal strength to try to prevent interference. The two men’s comments come on the heels of a recent call from a number of mayors in border areas for the government to improve mobile coverage in their areas, as local people show concerns over the 112 emergency number sometimes not being available. The minister for economic affairs said he is monitoring the situation and has pledged to come up with more approaches later this year.
