British operators roll out mobile connectivity in the Chunnel
Eurotunnel, the company that operates the famous tunnel underneath the English Channel, announced the availability of mobile connectivity on both directions along the passageway. Starting Tuesday, passengers on the Eurostar or the Shuttle can make calls or surf the web from their mobile devices throughout the journey, Yahoo Philippines Celebrity reports.
The south tunnel, which runs from France to the UK, has been equipped with mobile connectivity since July 2012. French operators Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR, together with infrastructure provider Alcatel-Lucent, rolled out their 2G and 3G network just ahead of the London Olympic Games.
Almost two years later, British operators have come together to install an identical system for the north tunnel. The partners in the venture are Vodafone, O2 and EE, the company created following the Orange and T-Mobile merger in the UK.
The operators plan to roll out 4G connectivity in both directions of the Channel in the future.
