Airtel, Tigo and Zantel establish mobile money operations in Tanzania
Tanzania’s mobile network operators Airtel, Tigo and Zantel announced a pioneering agreement, on Thursday, to allow people using their Airtel Money, Tigo M-Pesa and Zantel EzyPesa services to send money to each other via handsets, Telegeography.com reports, noting that the move is the first example of e-money interoperability in all of Africa and is expected to go active by the end of June.
In a joint press statement, the three carriers listed the major benefits for customers, such as the ability to send money at more affordable rates and in a simpler way without the use of a PIN code in making a withdrawal. They also pointed to the Bank of Tanzania’s role in facilitating the interoperability, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s and IFC’s role in the initiative.
