Elisa switches off WiMAX network on July 1

Estonian telecoms operator Elisa switched off its legacy WiMAX network on July 1, 2014, more than two years after stopping sales of WiMAX devices to residential users, TeleGeography.com reports on July 2, 2014, noting that in February 2012, Elisa announced that it would no longer be offering new xDSL or WiMAX connections to residential users.

It pointed out, however, that business broadband connections using the access types would still be sold. The company said that the move was driven by customer preference for mobile Internet services offered over its 3G/3.5G and 4G networks. Elisa’s 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network currently covers around 97 percent of the population.
