NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s leading cellco in terms of subscribers, and US-based Qualcomm Technologies have teamed up for a large-scale commercial voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) launch in Japan, according to Telegeography.com on July 9, 2014. According to a joint press release, the deployment features a VoLTE solution based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, with a fully featured multimode integrated VoLTE modem and IMS software solution, which supports SMS, high definition (HD) voice, video telephony and single radio voice call continuity (SRVCC). The latter provides a smooth handover from LTE to 3G without dropped calls.
