Airtel throws its weight behind call for immediate spectrum allocation

Bharti Airtel has added its voice to Vodafone’s in calling for the government to immediately allocate the frequencies it won at auction earlier this year, Telegeography.com reports on Oct 13, 2014. The Economic Times writes that the cellco, the nation’s largest mobile provider by subscribers, is requesting that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) allocate the new spectrum and extend the operator’s existing concession by six months to allow it to switch its networks in Delhi and Kolkata from using the current 900MHz spectrum to the new 1800MHz frequencies. The cellco explained that if the DoT did not take this action, mobile services for its 10.4 million subscribers in Delhi and 3.9 million users in Kolkata would be disrupted whilst it reconfigures its networks – a process it claims will take six to twelve months. CommsUpdate reported last week that UK-backed Vodafone India has also called for the immediate allocation of the spectrum, with a spokesperson for the telco threatening that further delays would have ‘repercussions bigger than any other quality of service issue seen in the history of mobile telecom in India.’
