Chinese vendor Huawei signed an agreement with WiMAX operators Qubee and Wateen to supply equipment for the duo to upgrade their infrastructure to support 4G services, the Daily Times reported on Wednesday. The overhaul is expected to be completed by the end of May 2014 and will improve coverage and capacity, increasing available download speeds to around 20Mbps.

Last December, Qubee and Wateen signed a pact to combine their wireless broadband operations, with the merger expected to be completed in H1 2014. Under the plans, the combined network would also undergo a phased upgrade to Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) technology.

Ahmed Bilal Masud, deputy CEO of Huawei Technologies Pakistan, noted that Huawei would be able to “provide the required support to the increasing complexity of network architecture through its multi-technology solutions and worldwide expertise.”
