EE announces trials of Voice Calls over WiFi and 4G

The UK operator EE is running a trial of a WiFi calling capability with plans to deploy it in autumn, on the latest handsets capable of supporting the service, Lteworld.org reports.

In recent demonstrations at an EE test lab, the company has also shown live 4G call services (VoLTE) and will begin trials later in 2014 using the 800-MHz spectrum acquired in last year’s auction. The trials will expand data and voice coverage, to bring services to a previously unconnected part of rural Oxfordshire.

A full commercial introduction of the capability is expected in 2015, when the EE 4G network covers more than 90 percent of the population. Its 4G coverage currently reaches 70 percent and it is putting £275 million ($469 million) this year into phone calls and aims to remove ‘whitespots’ for a ‘zero defect’ experience in the UK’s busiest areas.
