Ifetel approves Nextel approach to acquire Miditel spectrum
The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Ifetel) has approved Nextel Mexico’s approach to buy frequencies in the 10GHz band from regional operator Miditel, via its NII Digital affiliate. The concessions, which each encompass a 60MHz block of spectrum, cover six regions: 1 (Baja California), 2 (North West), 3 (North), 5 (West), 7 (Gulf & South) and 8 (South East). The frequencies are expected to be used to support Nextel’s transport network, according to a report from Telegeography.com.
Miditel, which was co-owned by Korea Telecom (now KT Corp) until 1998, initially set out its stall as a regional wireless in the local loop (WiLL) provider, after obtaining a 3.4GHz licence in the late-90s. The telco also secured a 1.9GHz PCS concession covering Mexico City, Estado de Mexico and Guadalajara.
