Vodacom tests carrier aggregation in South Africa

Vodacom has introduced 4G technology in South Africa, which can download an entire 1-GB movie in less than one minute, Telecompaper.com reported on Sept 23, explaining that this is the first time this has been achieved on a live mobile network in SA, using a smartphone and, according to the operator, shows mobile technology’s potential to supply SA\'s broadband needs into the future. The test was done directly on a mobile handset using carrier aggregation technology, and got download speeds of 270 Mbps. At that rate, an entire music album could be downloaded in just 10 seconds, or about four times faster than the fastest speed using current LTE technology on Vodacom\'s network. These trials come on the heels of the completion of a multi-billion rand six year-long radio network renewal program that has seen every single Vodacom base station in SA replaced with new equipment.
